facebook "whats that?"

Facebook is a social network service and website launched in February 2004 that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. As of January 2011[update], Facebook has more than 600 million active users. Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school, or college, or other characteristics. The name of the service stems from the colloquial name for the book given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better. Facebook allows anyone who declares themselves to be at least 13 years old to become a registered user of the website.
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities before opening to high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over.
A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social network service by worldwide monthly active users, followed by MySpace. Entertainment Weekly put it on its end-of-the-decade "best-of" list, saying, "How on earth did we stalk our exes, remember our co-workers' birthdays, bug our friends, and play a rousing game of Scrabulous before Facebook?" Quantcast estimates Facebook has 135.1 million monthly unique U.S. visitors in October 2010. According to Social Media Today as of April 2010, it is estimated that 41.6% of the U.S. population has a Facebook account.

This are the founders of Facebook:

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (born May 14, 1984) is an American computer scientist, software developer and philanthropist best known for creating the social networking site Facebook, of which he is CEO and president. It was co-founded as a private company in 2004 by Zuckerberg and classmates Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, and Chris Hughes while they were students at Harvard University. In 2010, Zuckerberg was named Time magazine's Person of the Year.

Eduardo Saverin (born March 19, 1982 in São Paulo, Brazil) is an American of Brazilian descent who is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Facebook, along with Mark Zuckerberg and others. He owns a 5% share of Facebook, worth $2.5 billion USD as of January 4, 2011.

Dustin Moskovitz (born May 22, 1984, Washington, D.C.) is an American entrepreneur who co-founded the social networking website Facebook along with Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin and Chris Hughes. Moskovitz owns a 6% share of Facebook, giving him a net worth of US$3 billion. In 2010, Forbes 400 ranked Dustin Moskovitz as the world's youngest billionaire.

Chris R. Hughes (born November 26, 1983(1983-11-26))is an American entrepreneur who co-founded and served as spokesman for the online social directory and networking site, Facebook, with Harvard roommates Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Eduardo Saverin. He was the coordinator of online organizing for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign on My.BarackObama.com, the campaign's online social networking website. Hughes is currently the Founder and Executive Director of Jumo and an Entrepreneur in Residence at General Catalyst Partners, a Cambridge, Massachusetts, venture-capital firm.
Jumo (a Yoruba word meaning "together in concert"), founded by Hughes in 2010, is a non-profit organization that "aims to help people find ways to help the world." In July 2010, UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS) appointed him to a 17-member "High Level Commission" of renowned politicians, business leaders, human rights activists, sports personalities and scientists tasked with spearheading a "social and political action campaign over the coming year aimed at galvanizing support for effective HIV prevention programmes".
Hughes grew up in Hickory, North Carolina, as the only child of Arlen "Ray" Hughes, a paper salesman, and Brenda Hughes, a public-school teacher. He is a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. In 2006 he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in history and literature. He is openly gay. In 2009, he attended President Obama's first state dinner with his partner Sean Eldridge.
Hughes, whose estimated net worth is more than $500 million, and his partner Sean Eldridge, Political Director of Freedom to Marry, announced their engagement in January 2011 at a reception in support of Freedom to Marry.
Hughes was the subject of an April 2009 cover story Fast Company magazine under the headline, "The Kid Who Made Obama President; How Facebook Cofounder Chris Hughes Unleashed Barack's Base- and Changed Politics and Marketing Forever".
